Banteay Samre was probably built about the same time as Angkor Wat - in the
mid-1100's AD. The towers do bear a resemblance to those at Angkor Wat.
Samre is the name of an ethnic group of people that lived near Phnom Kulen,
the mountain where the sandstone for most of the Angkor temples was quarried.
Unlike some of the other Angkor temples, Banteay Samre had an interior moat -
that is, it was located within the temple's perimeter walls. The moat is now
dry.
Like Banteay Srei, Banteay Samre is relatively remote from the other
Angkor Wat temples. In practical terms, this means a longer, more expensive
ride to this temple.
I hope you enjoy these photos of Banteay Samre.
This is one of the many doorways at Banteay Samre.
The doorways at the Angkor Wat temples always have intricate carvings.
