Jayavarman VII ruled Angkor from 1181 to 1220 AD and had more temples
built than any other Angkor ruler. He became king of Angkor at the age of 55
and continued to rule Angkor for another 40 years. One of the panels of
bas-reliefs at Bayon portrays a battle he won against the Chams - an older
civilization that was centered in what is now Vietnam.
Bas-reliefs at Bayon show homes that were contemporay to 12th century
Cambodia. The homes depicted there are almost identical to rural homes in
Cambodia today.
It's estimated that Ta Prohm was built in the late 1100's. It's one of the
must see temples of Angkor.
The stone spindles in the false doorways look as if
they'd been turned by a lathe.

The complexity of the place is pretty mind boggling - so many doorways into
the various structures and so many separate little buildings.
|
When you consider the thousands of meters of walls that were built and that
almost all of them were covered with these carvings - it's hard to imagine
how many people and years of work that had to go into these places.
